Our 2020 EVOO is finally ready and available to purchase in our online shop. We are also delighted to announce that we have done away with the old styrofoam and have moved to eco-friendly packaging!
“PUNGENT” – the one word to describe the 2020 evoos. A dry Autumn in 2019, followed by a drought in Spring and Summer has intensified the tastes to another level with very complex vegetative and herb tastes and lingering pepper at the end. The anti-oxidant levels are sure to be very high.
Over the last 5 years Rangihoua has been awarded 13 Golds and 5 Best In Class for its EVOOs and we are anticipating 2020 to be as successful.
Our 2019 Koronieki scored 98/100 in the Flos Olei –Italian Guide to Worlds Best Extra Virgin Olive Oil an outstanding result. Over 3000 oils are submitted which takes the international tasting panel over 2 months to taste and rank.
Well – what a relief to get to this point with all the challenges brought about by the Pandemic! Harvesting in lockdown created logistical issues of course but we were all grateful to be able to harvest, for the awesome weather conditions and to have work. It was eerily quiet as we worked our way around the many olive groves we manage on Waiheke – we felt like we had to tiptoe around so as not to disturb nature 😉
Recently I have been invited by Margaret Edwards (NZ only qualified International Judge) to be part of the Tasting to panel to judge the Australian Olive Oil awards competition. It will be a great experience for me.
Certainly an interesting time ahead as we head into a time of uncertainty. Difficult to budget and plan ahead but at least I can count on the Olive Trees to sustain us as they have done for many civilisations over time.
Stay Positive and look after each other.
