The long, hot, dry summer and warm autumn made for an easy harvest, this year, with the Rangihoua picking crew donning hats and sunblock to rake in our 2019 crop.
Our Rangihoua Estate family always expands at harvest time and we enjoyed the company of a wonderful group of international and local people joining in for the nine-week harvest. The olives were processed under the care of Rangihoua processing manager Darryl Beech whose greatest joy is to produce outstanding EVOOs.
The 2019 EVOO range is of exceptional quality with low free fatty acid levels and an abundance of flavour notes. The international standard for the level of free fatty acid in extra virgin olive oil is under 0.8%.
However, experts agree that under 0.2% free fatty acid is a benchmark to which producers should aspire. Once again, this year, we are proud our test results have hit that benchmark. All our 2019 oils have come in as having under 0.2% free fatty acid, highlighting the supreme quality of our EVOOS.
As always, we get excited trying the new oils and deciding which to blend and in what quantity. We have three beautiful oils of offer for 2019 plus a stunning limited edition EVOO.
2019 Extra Virgin Olive Oil – the range on offer
Our 2019 Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) comes in four varieties this year;
Waiheke Blend – our signature blend combines Ascolano, Mission and Verdale olive varieties. This medium-intensity oil has a delightfully light and creamy start with a hint of almonds, building to a lingering peppery finish.
Smooth and buttery, our Picual is always a favourite for its fruity notes. A hint of green apple and a whiff of citrus lead to a climax of peppery watercress.
Our Italian Frantoio Blend, combining Frantoio and Leccino olive varieties, will be sent to the Flos Oleis Italian competition once again this year and we will await the results with anticipation. Creamy, nutty and spicy, this year’s complex blend offers mid-tones of nasturtium, mesclun, green capsicum and rocket/arugula, with a prolonged chilli finish.
This year’s harvest of our limited edition Greek variety Koroneiki has turned out to be a stunner as we welcome it back to our store. Light and oh so floral, this oil dances on the palate and conjures up images of ancient feasts, flower gardens and rolling meadows. Delicate, creamy and fruity, with hints of red apple and green banana, its chilli finish is something of a surprise and keeps the taste-buds dancing. Because of the small quantity, it will only be available while stocks last so don’t forget to order soon!
